How to Measure Watch Lug Width Accurately

A replacement strap can transform a watch, but only if it sits properly between the lugs. Knowing how to measure watch lug width removes the guesswork: it helps you order the correct size, avoid unsightly gaps and make sure the spring bars are held securely. For most traditional watches, the process takes less than a minute.
Lug width is not the width of the old strap at its buckle, nor the overall width of the watch case. It is the internal distance between the two lugs where the strap attaches. That measurement is normally given in millimetres and is the key number to use when choosing a replacement strap.
What watch lug width means
The lugs are the small projections at the top and bottom of a watch case. They hold the spring bar or screw bar that secures the strap. The gap between them determines the strap width at the watch end.
Common sizes include 16mm, 18mm, 20mm, 21mm, 22mm and 24mm. A 20mm watch needs a 20mm strap at the attachment point. It may taper to 18mm or 16mm at the buckle, but the width at the lugs must match the case.
This is why a strap can look close in size yet still be wrong. An 18mm strap fitted to 20mm lugs leaves visible spaces at each side. A 22mm strap forced into a 20mm gap can buckle at the edges, put pressure on the spring bars and make strap changes unnecessarily difficult.
How to measure watch lug width at home
The most accurate method is to use digital callipers, although a simple metric ruler can work well when used carefully. Measure in millimetres rather than converting from inches, as even a small rounding error can lead to the wrong strap size.
Remove the existing strap if possible
For the clearest measurement, remove the existing strap using a spring-bar tool. Place the forked end against the shoulder of the spring bar, compress it carefully and release one side of the strap from the lug. Work over a soft cloth or tray, as spring bars can jump when released.
Once the strap is off, measure the inside gap from one inner lug wall to the other. Keep the callipers or ruler straight across the opening. Do not measure the outside edge of one lug to the outside edge of the other, as this gives the overall lug span rather than the lug width.
If the watch uses screws or a proprietary bar system, only remove it if you have the correct tool and are comfortable doing so. Some screw bars can be damaged by an ill-fitting screwdriver, while certain vintage watches deserve professional handling.
Measure with the strap still fitted
If you do not want to remove the current strap, measure it where it meets the case. Turn the watch over and place a ruler across the strap immediately below the lugs. Check the measurement at the watch end, not halfway down the strap.
This method is useful, but it has limits. Thick leather, curved end pieces and worn strap edges can obscure the true width. If your measurement appears to sit between sizes, remove the strap and check the bare lug gap before ordering.
Read the measurement correctly
Watch lug widths are usually whole millimetre sizes. If you measure close to 20mm, the correct size is likely 20mm, not 19mm or 21mm. However, 19mm and 21mm watches are common enough, particularly among dress watches and Swiss brands, so never assume a watch is a standard even-numbered size.
For a ruler measurement, look carefully at the inner edges of the lugs. A gap that reaches just beyond 20mm may genuinely be 21mm. Digital callipers are particularly useful here because they show the difference immediately and reduce the chance of ordering a strap that is almost right.
Check the case-back engraving and manufacturer details
Before measuring, inspect the reverse of the watch and any original paperwork. Some manufacturers state the lug width in specifications, and a model reference can often confirm it. This is helpful when measuring a watch with integrated-looking lugs, a tightly fitted bracelet or an awkwardly shaped case.
Still, treat generic online size charts with care. A brand may offer several case sizes in the same range, each with a different lug width. A 40mm and 42mm version of a model do not necessarily use the same strap. Confirm the precise case reference, then compare it with your physical measurement where possible.
The case diameter is not a reliable substitute. Two 40mm watches may take entirely different straps: one could use 20mm, another 22mm. Lug width is chosen by the case design, not by a fixed formula.
Curved lugs, fitted straps and awkward cases
Most watches accept a straight-ended strap, provided the lug width is correct. Yet the shape of the case can affect how much clearance there is between the strap and the watch.
A watch with sharply curved lugs may suit a supple leather, suede or FKM rubber strap that follows the wrist without pushing against the case. A thick padded strap can look excellent on a larger pilot or diver-style watch, but may sit too high or feel crowded on a slim dress watch. Width determines compatibility at the lugs; thickness and profile determine much of the final comfort and appearance.
Fitted end links and fitted rubber straps are different. They are shaped specifically for one case design, so matching the stated lug width alone does not guarantee a fit. If your watch has an integrated bracelet or a strap that flows into a unique case recess, look for a strap made for that exact model or consider an open-ended strap where appropriate.
Vintage watches need extra care. Their lug spacing may be an uncommon size, and older lug holes can be more delicate than modern cases. Choose a strap that fits without force and use spring bars of the correct diameter and length.
Choose the right strap once you have the measurement
After you have confirmed the lug width, choose a strap with the same width at the watch end. Then consider the material, taper and length.
A full-grain leather strap offers a refined everyday finish and gradually develops character with wear. Suede provides a softer, more relaxed look, while sailcloth and FKM rubber are practical choices for active use, warmer weather and regular contact with water. Leather should be removed before swimming or showering; FKM rubber is the better option when water resistance is part of your routine.
Taper changes the visual balance. A 20mm strap that tapers to 16mm gives a classic, dressier profile and can make a compact watch feel lighter on the wrist. A straight 20mm-to-20mm strap has more presence and often suits tool watches, divers and smart-looking sports models. Neither is universally better - it depends on the case shape, dial style and the look you want to create.
Length matters as much as width. Measure your wrist or use the strap length guidance before ordering, especially if you have a smaller or larger wrist. A correctly sized strap should fasten near the middle of its adjustment holes, rather than at the very first or last hole.
Traditional watches and smartwatches are measured differently
This guide applies most directly to conventional watches with standard spring-bar lugs. Apple Watch, Garmin, Samsung, Fitbit, Google Pixel Watch and Huawei models often use dedicated connectors rather than a simple lug gap. For these devices, shop by the exact watch model, generation and case size rather than trying to measure a conventional lug width.
Some smartwatches do use standard quick-release straps, often in 20mm or 22mm widths. Check the device specification and inspect the connector before buying. If the watch has a quick-release spring bar, a compatible quick-release strap makes fitting easier and avoids the need for a separate spring-bar tool.
Avoid the most common fitting mistakes
The biggest mistake is ordering by appearance. A strap labelled for a similar-looking watch, or one that seems only 1mm different, may not fit neatly or safely. Always work from the measured internal lug gap or a verified model specification.
Also check that the strap’s spring bars are suitable for the watch. Quick-release bars are convenient, but on very tight lug openings, thick straps or heavily curved cases, a standard spring bar may offer a cleaner fit. If a strap resists installation, do not force it. Recheck the width, bar length and strap thickness first.
A slight gap between a straight strap and a rounded watch case is normal. The concern is not a tiny shadow line around the case, but a strap that moves side to side, pinches at the lugs or sits under visible pressure.
Once you know the measurement, ordering becomes straightforward: match the lug width exactly, select a material that suits how you wear the watch and choose a length that is comfortable all day. A well-fitted premium handcrafted strap should feel like part of the watch, not an accessory you have had to persuade into place.
