How to Measure Watch Lugs for the Right Strap

A strap can be beautifully made, comfortably padded and finished in exactly the right colour, but it will never sit properly if the fit at the case is wrong. Knowing how to measure watch lugs gives you the one measurement that matters most when buying a replacement strap: the lug width in millimetres.

For most traditional watches, the job takes less than a minute. The key is measuring the gap between the lugs, rather than the full width of the case or the distance from the top of one lug to the bottom of the other. Once you have the correct number, choosing a premium leather, suede, sailcloth or FKM rubber strap becomes far more straightforward.

What are watch lugs?

Watch lugs are the two pairs of projections extending from the case at 12 and 6 o'clock. They hold the spring bars that secure the strap or bracelet in place. The lug width is the internal distance between the two lugs at the point where the strap meets the watch case.

This is not the same as the case diameter. A 40mm watch may use a 20mm, 21mm or 22mm strap, depending on its design. It is also different from lug-to-lug length, which runs vertically from the end of the upper lugs to the end of the lower lugs and is useful when judging how a watch will wear on the wrist.

Most conventional watches use an even-numbered lug width, commonly 16mm, 18mm, 20mm, 22mm or 24mm. Some brands use odd sizes, particularly 19mm and 21mm. A one-millimetre difference may sound minor, but it can leave an unsightly gap or stop the strap fitting at all.

How to measure watch lugs accurately

Remove the existing strap or bracelet first, if possible. This exposes the full opening between the lugs and prevents leather, rubber or a metal end link from obscuring the measurement. A spring-bar tool makes removal easier, though a careful jeweller can help if your watch has a tight-fitting bracelet or you would rather not risk marking the case.

Place a digital calliper across the inside edges of the lugs, immediately beneath the spring-bar holes. Read the measurement in millimetres. This is the most accurate method, particularly if your watch takes an uncommon size such as 19mm or 21mm.

If you do not have callipers, a steel ruler marked in millimetres works well. Hold it flat across the gap and read the distance between the inner faces of the lugs. Keep the ruler square to the case. Measuring at an angle can turn a 20mm opening into an uncertain reading.

A printed millimetre ruler is a useful fallback, but check that it has printed at true scale before relying on it. Tape it to a firm, flat surface rather than trying to hold paper against the watch. For a quick confirmation, measure the end of your existing strap where it meets the case, not its buckle end. On a standard straight-end strap, this should match the lug width.

Measure the inside gap, not the outside edges

The most common mistake is measuring from the outer edge of one lug to the outer edge of the other. That figure is wider than the strap opening and will result in ordering the wrong size. Focus only on the empty space into which the strap end fits.

Take the measurement near the spring bar rather than farther away from the case. Some watches have shaped, curved or slightly tapered lugs, so the opening may appear wider at the tips than it is at the attachment point.

Check the watch specification before measuring

A manufacturer specification, original paperwork or a trusted retailer listing can confirm the lug width. This is particularly useful for well-known models with published dimensions. Still, measure the watch where you can. Previous owners may have fitted an incorrect strap, specifications can vary between generations, and similar-looking models do not always share the same width.

If your current strap is marked 20mm or 22mm, treat that as a helpful clue rather than absolute proof. Leather can compress at the ends and low-cost straps are occasionally labelled inaccurately. A quick measurement gives you confidence before choosing a replacement.

Choosing the correct strap width

For a conventional watch with straight lugs, select a strap that matches the lug width exactly. A 20mm watch needs a 20mm strap; a 22mm watch needs a 22mm strap. Do not force a wider strap between the lugs. It may bend, distort at the edges and make spring-bar fitting difficult.

A strap that is too narrow will technically fit if the spring bars can hold it, but the visible gaps either side are rarely flattering. It can also move more freely at the case, which makes the fit feel less considered. Exact sizing gives the watch a cleaner profile and supports the strap evenly at its most stressed point.

The buckle width is a separate measurement. Many straps taper from the lug end towards the buckle, such as 20mm to 16mm or 22mm to 18mm. This is intentional and affects the visual balance on the wrist, not compatibility with the watch. Always shop by the first number, which is the width at the lugs.

When standard lug-width rules do not apply

Not every watch uses a conventional straight-end strap. Integrated-bracelet watches, proprietary leather straps and designs with fitted end pieces may require a model-specific replacement. In these cases, the gap measurement alone is not enough because the shape, pin placement and attachment system also matter.

Curved-end straps deserve similar care. Their stated width should still match the lug width, but the curve must suit the case profile. A curved 20mm strap designed for one watch may not sit flush against another 20mm case.

Vintage watches can introduce another variation. Their lug width may be 17mm, 19mm or another less common size, and older spring-bar holes can be delicate. A correctly sized, supple strap is often the safer choice than forcing a thicker construction into a tight opening.

Measuring smartwatch lugs and connectors

Apple Watch and many Garmin, Samsung, Fitbit, Google and Huawei models use proprietary connectors rather than exposed conventional lugs. For these watches, shop by the exact device family, case size and generation instead of measuring a millimetre gap.

Apple Watch bands are selected by compatible case groups, while other smartwatches may use either a brand-specific quick-release connector or a standard 20mm or 22mm spring-bar fitting. Check the rear of the watch, its existing band and the manufacturer details before ordering. A Garmin model with standard 22mm quick-release bars needs a 22mm strap; another Garmin may require a dedicated connector.

If a smartwatch uses adapters, measure the strap-side opening on the adapter only after confirming that the adapter is made for your specific watch. The adapter determines device compatibility, while the strap width determines which replacement strap it accepts.

A few fitting details worth checking

Lug width confirms the strap size, but it is not the only detail that affects the result. Check whether your watch uses standard spring bars, quick-release spring bars, screws or a proprietary pin system. Most replacement straps suit standard spring bars, and quick-release bars make regular strap changes especially simple.

Consider case thickness and lug shape when choosing material. A slim dress watch often suits a refined, lightly padded leather strap, while a substantial diver or field watch can carry sailcloth, FKM rubber or a thicker full-grain leather construction. These are style and comfort decisions rather than sizing rules, but they help the finished combination look intentional.

Wrist size matters too. A correctly sized strap at the lugs can still feel unsuitable if it is too short or too long. Check the stated strap length and account for the watch case itself when estimating your total wrist fit.
